Zion Memorial Gardens cemetery consists of forty acres of land and contains approximately 300,000 gravesites and a community mausoleum. The cemetery was officially established June 2, 1970, when Dr. A.G. Gaston acquired the cemetery and New Grace Hill Cemetery, Inc. also located in Birmingham. Both cemeteries became a subsidiary of their parent company, Booker T. Washington Insurance Company in Birmingham, AL. Dr. A. G. Gaston (1892-1996) organized the Booker T. Washington Burial Society in 1923, responding to the lack of burial insurance available to African Americans. He believed, “a proper funeral is of immense importance….it’s the very least you can do for a man.” The cemetery has been under the ownership of several owners since Mr. Gaston’s death in 1996.

The new administration at Zion Memorial Gardens strives to provide committed services to families with dignity and still values the beliefs and principles we believe the cemetery was founded upon. We provide an array of services and burial products at an affordable cost.

In lieu of inflation and the need for more affordable burial options for families, we have expanded our reach to the citizens of West Birmingham to include Historic Lakeview cemetery. The cemetery is a non-profit cemetery owned by St. John Missionary Baptist Church of Edgewater, where Rev. Dr. Johnathan McPherson is the pastor. Zion Memorial Gardens manages and operates the cemetery on behalf of the church.  Our goal in this partnership is to lessen the burden of families in their time of need by decreasing the overall cost of burial services, while rendering the highest level of compassion to our families. We understand the many challenges families face in planning funeral services for their loved ones. We are here to assist in your most difficult time of need.
